Juneteenth, also known as Juneteenth National Independence Day or Freedom Day, is considered the oldest known celebration commemorating the end of slavery in the United States. President Abraham Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation in 1863, but it wasn’t until two years later that the news arrived in Galveston, Texas on June 19, 1865.
